Most people under estimate the value of their time.
I certainly did.
I spent the majority of my twenties working at jobs that
paid less than $10 an hour.
It wasn’t until I was about 27 – 28, that I realized that I was
really hurting myself because I was settling for so little.
There was a time when making $500 a week was my goal.
$500 a week would have paid for all of my living expenses
plus given me a little extra for an occasional night out.
One day I got hired for $15 an hour doing carpet cleaning
work. Part-time hours, 5 minutes from my house, Saturdays
off…. I jumped on it.
It gave me two things…
1) The most money I had ever been paid per hour.
2) The chance to have an insiders perspective of the
well-to-do.
We cleaned a lot of businesses but we also had quite a
few residentials to do as well. Mostly higher end clientele.
Homes in the $300K-$500K ++ range.
Most of the time the customers were not at home.
But some were.
There was one house in particular that I fondly remember.
It was huge…
Over 4,000 square feet.
Everything in this place sparkled and shined.
The basement was finished… complete with a wet
bar, entertainment center, private bath and bedroom,
weight room and more.
The upstairs was just as plentiful.
When we walked in, the owner was sitting at his kitchen
counter reading the morning paper. Very casually dressed
with a matching demeanor, he let us in, showed us what
he wanted and then went back to his paper.
I had to run to the truck a few times for supplies and each
time I passed him, I noticed that he was either talking on
the phone or checking his email.
I found out afterwards that this guy owned and operated
multiple 24 hour ( highly successful ) pool halls in and around
the city as well as storage units and car washes.
He made money 24/7.
Even while he slept.
Literally!
It got me thinking…
Here I was in this guys house, cleaning his carpets for $15
an hour while he was getting paid for 24 hours… whether
he worked or not.
That was my first real, up close experience with what I
would call an awesome lifestyle.
Pictures of the wife and kids on the walls.
2 brand new cars in the garage.
2 jet skis in the driveway.
In ground pool out back.
I can honestly say that I changed my thoughts about
making money after leaving that guys house.
$500 a week was no longer what I wanted.
I wanted $500 a day.
I set out to find vehicles that would allow me to achieve
that kind of cash-flow repeatedly and consistently.
Did it happen over-night?
No.
Not even close.
A lot of trial and error.
Here are a few of things I did to make the change
from hourly employee to entrepreneur…
* I set my personal hourly rate at $100 an hour.
I outsourced a lot of activities that I wasn’t good
at so I could focus on I.P.As… or Income Producing
Activities.
* I eliminated my cable and newspaper subscriptions.
No more negativity or time wasting information.
* I reduced the amount of the time I spent with time
wasters. People who didn’t have the same attitude as
I did with regards to improving myself, were sent to the
back of the line.
As I began to value my time more, the more I realized
that how I was spending my time, had a dramatic impact
on my bottom line results.
What you focus on always tends to appear. So if you’re
focused on working a job and paying the bills, that’s what
will appear over and over again.
In order to get out that rut, you’ve got to shift your
focus from what is to WHAT IF.
Then and only then will you begin to recognize how
truly valuable your time is. And how spending it on
the wrong activities will only keep you frustrated
and broke.
You can make that shift from where you are to where
you want to be. I did it. But do yourself a tiny favor
and don’t think in terms of achieving success tomorrow
or next month. Think at least 12 months out. Doing
so won’t add any unneccessary pressure.
Besides… think of it this way…
You’ll end up spending the next 12 months anyway.
May as well spend it wisely right?
