Lately, I’ve been thinking a lot about the LAST recession.

The 2002 fiasco that followed 9/11.

I had just subscribed to Dan Kennedy’s “NO BS Marketing Newsletter”
at the time. And in my first issue, learned something that changed
my entire life.

In fact, DK’s lesson has been my constant companion.

A “friend” that’s guided me through some pretty scary times.

And has kept me out of a LOT of trouble.

Anyway, what was the lesson?

The life-or-death importance of having the ability to **produce**.

It’s DK’s contention that if you cultivate your ability to produce,
you will never have to worry about moolah.

Never have lasting financial anxieties.

And that you will, in fact, be part of a VERY small group who makes
things happen — even if you have to drag the rest of the economy
along with you to success.

It was an extremely inspiring piece.

And it was then when I really got SERIOUS about learning to sell.

I started writing out ads in my own hand every day — regardless of
how boring the task, or how tired I was.

I made it a habit to read and re-read (at LEAST 10 times) high
ticket products I bought.

And, even more importantly, I stopped worrying so much.

Because I just KNEW that by developing my ability to produce (in my
case, to sell) everything would come out okay in the wash.

Yes, things would be bumpy and I’d have setbacks.

But I knew everything would take care of itself in the end.

And guess what?

Now that we’re hip deep in an even WORSE recession, I got this
bug to pass Dan’s life-changing lesson on to you.

To reassure you that, no matter how “hairy” things get, if you hone
your ability to produce, you got nuttin’ to worry about.

Your ability to produce is the most valuable skill you can have.

The ultimate asset and investment.

Treat it like a proverbial “money tree” — water it, care for it,
and let it GROW — and you’ll inoculate yourself (like a vaccine)
against all the poop about to hit the fan.

Get this….

Earlier today I met with a prospect of mine
who just so happened to live near where I
am.

In fact, I could WALK to her place if need be.

It’s amazing that someone could live so close
to you but it took a massive communications tool
like the Internet to connect her and I!

Any-hoo…

There we are

Talking about her desires, interests and about
how she’s bored, confused, feels unfilled, etc…

She’s…

Young (early 30s)

Attractive

Healthy & Fit

Has a loving and adoring husband

But she’s UNHAPPY.

Why?

I had to pry a little deeper to find out.

At first, there was strong resistance.

Then a crack appeared

A little wider

A little more

Then BAM!

She was opening up like a 4th of July Grand Finale.

The root of her unhappiness revolved around ONE thing…

MONEY!

(Is that really a shocker though for you and I?)

The bottom line is this…

Her husband pockets $150K a yr as a V.P. of some
big shot tele-communications firm.

But he spends $175K a yr.

WOW.

Now that’s a money problem!

In other words, he’s sending them into
a bottomless pit called DEBT.

So she wants to cover her butt.

She wants to start making her own money.

Ok, this I can help her with.

Just when I think we’re making progress,
she throws me a curve ball by saying…

“I want to make some money, but I can’t
afford to put any money into anything right
now”.

Double WOW!

Was this chick for real?

At this point, I’m about to get up and walk out.

She’s not worth my time.

Not because she supposedly didn’t have any money,
but because the last thing I’m going to do is sit there
and try to CONVINCE her that she’s unaware of how
UNAWARE she really is.

Pay close attention…

Her next move shifted everything.

She pulls out a pack of Marlboros!

Are you freakin serious?

Marlboro cigarettes… they’re like $4 something a pack.

But remember… she doesn’t have the money!

So I turned the conversation to them.

“How much do you smoke”, I asked?

Her reply was…

“At least a carton a week”.

Hold on…

This gets good in a second.

So I asked her a 2nd question..

“How much are you spending each month on cigarettes”?

Her reply was…

Remember…

She THINKS she doesn’t have the money!

She said to me…

“I figured it up once. One carton every 5 days at $33.45
apiece totaled something like $200.70 a month”.

Holy Cow!

$200.70 a month for cigarettes.

That’s a car payment or a deposit into a savings acct.

But no

She’s spending $200.70 a month on cigarettes.

Unbelievable.

So right then and there I told her…

“You have the money you need to get started
in something. But you can’t see the money because
you’re too busy puffing away”.

She got PISSED.

Like a wet cat.

Claws out, hissing

It was fierce.

It was like I had just insulted her to the 10th degree.

Needless to say, our conversation didn’t end well.

Nor has she called or texted me back.

Oh well.

I’m not about to spend my time trying to convince
someone else that they have the money.

Everyone has money.

Somewhere, somehow, if they want it bad enough

They’ll find the coin to pay for it.

Oh and get this…

As I walked out of the cafe where I met her

I saw her drive away in a black Mercedes.

The only thing I could was just smile and walk away.

Knowing full well that she’s the one in trouble, not me.

Hopefully she finds a way out before it’s too late.

Here’s another real life example of how speaking
“INCREASE” into someone can radically change their
mood, their day AND their reception to you….

Yesterday…

Presidents Day.

Lazy day for me.

Lounging on the couch reading This Thing Called You
by Ernest Holmes.

Any-hoo…

I got to thinking that I should get one of my vehicles towed.

I have a ‘97 Jeep Grand Cherokee.

It’s the grandest of all off-road recreational vehicles.

4×4 with a V-8 engine that would go anywhere I wanted to.

But sadly, it died on me about 2 weeks ago in the driveway.

My girlfriend thinks it’s time to put the Beast out of it’s misery.

But I refused.

Not yet.

Not until we find out what’s exactly wrong with him.

So I pulled out my trusty Triple AAA card and
requested a tow to my favorite auto mechanic.

About 40 minutes later, my nightmare begins.

The tow truck driver backs into the drive, gets
out and starts with this cocky attitude. He’s
pissed off at the world and he’s letting the world
know it.

I was like…

“Dude, you gotta chill out”.

And I actually pondered the idea of telling him to
take a hike, WITHOUT my Beast.

But I didn’t.

Instead, I went inside for a moment, collected my
thoughts and went back out to face my quick tempered
friend.

My how things change quickly when you start asking
QUESTIONS about the other person.

In 2 minutes I found out…

* It was his birthday

* He was supposed to get off work at 4 pm but the
company wouldn’t let him go home. It was now 5:30.

(Oh, how I remember those days)

* He wasn’t aware that he’d being towing my beloved
Beast 33 miles south to Salem thus easily eating up
another hour of to-n-from travel.

In those same 2 minutes…

He completed altered his disposition towards me.

Laughing and joking, bantering back-n-forth.

He was a good old country boy who couldn’t wait
to get home to celebrate his b-day with his family.

Could you blame him for being a little pissed off?

As he stepped into his truck, he glanced a final smile
as I wished him a sincere Happy Birthday.

All to often when a person is confrontational like
the tow truck driver was, the other person would
assume the same confrontational attitude and its
like two battling rams charging head on.

But instead, I stepped back. Took a moment to pause.

Put myself into HIS shoes and then re-entered back
into the mix… which producedly a completely different
outcome.

Giving him a chance to be heard was probably the
BEST thing that had happened to him all day.

For a moment, he FELT important.

And my kindness to him was REFLECTED back to me.

Wow.

What a valuable lesson.

Good Afternoon:

It’s a lazy Sunday.

Just chillin with the family.

A few minutes ago, I walked out the front
door to get the Sunday paper.

( I don’t read the paper mind you, I just
want the comics… I love Dilbert!)

While on the front porch, my neighbor was
on his, looking up at the cloudy sky. He looked
a bit “spacy” so I ventured toward his way.

After a moment of mindless “How ya doing”
chit-chat, my neighbor gets pissed. Not at me,
but at what he has to look forward to tomorrow.

“I’m not looking forward to Monday”, he expresses
with a clear distressed tone.

Why?

He has to rise at 3:00 AM.

He has to be at work and in his Schwebels Bread
delivery truck by 4:00 AM in order to make his daily
route to all of the grocery stores on his list.

If he’s lucky, he MIGHT be able to make it home for dinner.

I feel for the guy.

Early 40s, makes maybe $36K a year (if that!).

Grueling 12 hr days.

Dealing with upset, angry, broke individuals everyday.

Who are pissed off at the mindless jobs they hold, that
keep them one financial hic-cup away from being homeless.

And then there’s his own situation.

Wife and 3 kids.

Beat up 11 yr old car in the driveway.

Ranch home with broken siding and a leaky roof.

What’s he going to do?

In his mind, he’s trapped.

In MY mind, he’s trapped.

But not in the same way he thinks he’s trapped.

In MY opinion, he’s trapped because of his own
stinkin thinkin.

He’s rejected my help numerous times.

I’ve offered to give him some precious one
on one time to get him up and running, but
he’s declined.

Oh well.

You can’t drag a horse to water, no matter how
much its dying of thirst.

I even gave him a copy of Joe Schroeders
Day Job Bailout, which is an easy 20 minute
read.

Nope.

Not interested.

2nd oh well.

There comes a time when you have to let
someone go.

He SEES my lifestyle.

No job.

New cars in the driveway.

Complete freedom.

Does he want what I have?

Of course he does.

But he’s got too much EGO standing in his way.

He was born and raised on go to school, get a
job, pay your bills, live happily ever after.

Unfortunately, that recipe doesn’t work anymore.

At least not for guys like me.

Guys like me squash the idea of a job in order
to go out and create our own personal economies.

As for my neighbor, he won’t change anytime soon.

Probably not ever.

And that’s ok.

You can’t save everyone.

Only those who first want to be saved.

Last night, I got a call from a 76 yr old man who’s broke,
living on a meager pension and social security. He said
he less than $10K to his name.

Now some might argue that he’s NOT broke. Considering
the fact that he has $10K lying around. But at 76, he’s broke.

In todays world, $10K is peanuts.

It’s 2 months, maybe 3 months of living expenses at best.

Then you’re on the street.

But back to his call…

He asked me to be honest with him.

And I was.

To a point.

He asked if he could make money “quickly” with our programs.

(Side Note –> I love it when prospects use the word “quickly”)

Any-hoo..

He and I went back and forth for 11 minutes.

The end result of our conversation is that to this
minute, he hasn’t joined. And I don’t think he will.

Because he’s looking for an over-night answer
(subsconsciously) to a lifelong issue of not having
any money.

He wants a quick fix now.

He doesn’t want to wait for it.

Because he can’t.

He’s SCARED to DEATH!

And can you blame him?

Hell no.

If I were his shoes, I’d be a little freaked out too.

But the one piece of honesty that I didn’t share with
him was the fact that he’s in the position he’s in because
of his thoughts and actions to date.

WOW!

What a slap in the face that would be.

To tell a 76 yr old man that it’s HIS fault he’s broke.

And not the $5K program he just joined 4 weeks ago
but hadn’t touched.

And not the 1/2 dozen MLM programs he’s given thousands
to over the years.

And it’s not the government or the company he worked for.

It was him.

He can sit on the phone and make excuse after excuse after
excuse, but it won’t change a single thing.

Until he changes.

Amazing isn’t it?

That there are people just like him who 40, 50 , 60 yrs old
and living on next to nothing becasuse they’re too busy blaming
someone or something else for what they don’t have.

I can’t talk.

I used to do the same thing.

Until I woke up and broke free of my “Stinkin Thinkin”.

And it certainly wasn’t an over-night transformation.

It’s been an on-going process of change, adjustment,
caliberation, maintenance and lots of fine tuning along
the way.

What a journey it’s been.

My only hope is that my 76 yr old friend (and others like
him) understand this before it’s really too late.
